How to back up your phone before a repair

Most repairs do not affect your data, but some carry a small risk that cannot be fully avoided. A backup takes a few minutes and means your photos, messages and contacts are safe whatever happens.

iPhone: back up to iCloud

  1. Connect to Wi-Fi.
  2. Go to Settings, tap your name, then iCloud › iCloud Backup.
  3. Tap Back Up Now and wait for it to finish.

If you do not have enough iCloud storage, back up to a computer instead.

iPhone: back up to a computer

  • Mac: connect your iPhone, open Finder, select your iPhone and click Back Up Now.
  • Windows: use the Apple Devices app (or iTunes on older versions of Windows).
  • Tick Encrypt local backup to include saved passwords and Health data.

Android

  • Go to Settings and search for Backup, then tap Back up now. Menus vary between brands.
  • Turn on backup in Google Photos to keep your photos and videos safe.
  • Samsung owners can also use Samsung Cloud or Smart Switch on a computer.

Before you hand your phone in

  • Remove your SIM card, memory card and case.
  • Make a note of the fault, and take a screenshot if it shows on screen.
  • Never send passwords or passcodes in a message. If we need access to test the repair, we will discuss it with you in person.
