Signs your iPhone battery needs replacing
Every phone battery wears out over time. The good news is that a battery replacement is one of the quickest and most cost-effective repairs, and it can make an older phone feel new again.
Check your battery health
On an iPhone, go to Settings › Battery › Battery Health (called Battery Health & Charging on some versions). Maximum Capacity shows how much charge the battery can hold compared with when it was new.
- Apple designs most iPhone batteries to keep around 80 per cent of their original capacity after 500 full charge cycles. iPhone 15 and later models are designed for around 1,000 cycles.
- If your phone shows Service or recommends a replacement, the battery is worn out.
Warning signs
- The battery no longer lasts the day.
- The phone switches off suddenly, often at 20 to 30 per cent.
- Apps open slowly or the phone feels sluggish.
- The phone gets unusually warm while charging.
A swollen battery is a safety issue
If the screen is lifting, there is a gap around the edge of the phone, or the back looks bulged, the battery may be swelling. Stop using and charging the phone, do not press on it, keep it away from heat and get it checked as soon as possible.
Make your new battery last
- Avoid leaving your phone in hot places, such as a car dashboard in summer.
- Keep Optimised Battery Charging switched on.
- On iPhone 15 and later, you can set a charging limit, such as 80 per cent, in battery settings.
